COMMENTS FROM PAST INTERNS
My King's Head Experience
There are lots of adverts for unpaid internships out there, but the ones offered by the King's Head are definitely well worth doing. It is a well-established professional fringe theatre run by experienced, enthusiastic and vibrant people and if you show commitment to the training and treat it as you would any paid job, you will get the chance to learn all the things you need to learn and get a great reference for the future. If you don't have much prior experience, and if you can give the time, you should try to get to work on one of the longer runs (about six weeks) as you will then get the chance to be part of the progress of a show when it "hits" the theatre, from the get-in right to the get-out. I worked on one of the short runs (one week) and so there was no set to build or lights to rig and focus but it wasn't long before I was being left alone to operate the sound and lights and be "on the book", and it was a great feeling knowing that I had been judged to have that ability and to be trusted with it, particularly as the King's Head was to be my first London credit.
The only downside I can think of about the internship is the obvious one - it's unpaid - but getting the experience, the reference, the London credit and being made to feel part of the King's Head family more than made up for that. Overall, it's an excellent place to get a proper idea of what the work of a theatre technician involves so if you're thinking of doing an unpaid technical internship, and you're prepared to get stuck in and make the most of the opportunity, the King's Head experience will be very rewarding for you.
